Vehicle thefts are at their lowest level in more than 45 years, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS statistics for 2014 show 69,547 vehicles were stolen, compared to 231,323 in 2004. With more than 36 million vehicles on the road, these figures show that just 0.2% of all vehicles were stolen in 2014.

The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has called for the ONS to add details of how the vehicle was stolen, in order to keep the automotive industry ahead of the criminals.
