The Government in Scotland is expected to cut the nation’s drink-drive limit putting the legal limit below that south of the border.

New proposals, which if approved by the Scottish Parliament would see the cut come into effect on 5th December, 2014, would see the blood alcohol limit cut from 80 milligrams to 50 milligrams in every 100 millilitres of blood.

The cut would bring Scotland’s drink-drive limit into line with much of Europe. Draft legislation has been laid before Parliament following a consultation exercise.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said it “strongly” supported the Scottish Government’s move having campaigned for a lower drink-drive limit to be introduced across the whole of the UK.

The charity said it hoped that other parts of the UK would now follow Scotland’s lead in taking steps to reduce their drink-drive limits.

Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: “Drink-driving shatters families and communities and we must take action to reduce the risk on our roads.”
